| What is Progressive House? |
Mar 23 2007 | Comments (1)
OK, my first blog for the site, i'm gonna use this space to discuss several topics that i get asked about often, and kick starting this is probably the most commonly asked question.
As all things in music, a accurate or fixed description is almost impossible, and there are no rules set in stone. The term progressive house really became popular during the legendary Sasha & Digweed era around early 2000 (not to mean they dont now, jus that its changed alot since). With regards to the way the tracks sound.... in general progressive tracks are built around several understated elements all working together, without any of them trying to get too much attention. The sounds used here are also quite rounded off and you would rarely find very edgy or aggressive sounds that demand solo attention. The magic of these tracks is how they subtly and sub-counsiously suck you in and have you engrossed in noticing all its finer elements, without making it seem like they are trying to do so.
Having said that, trying to identify a progressive house track based on only the kind of elements used may not be the most accurate way to do it, since no-one sticks to one pattern or style of sounds. Instead what makes progressive house is the way the tracks are constructed and presented. To me, progressive house is about the music being layered together to form a journey that is absolutely seamless, as if it was meant to be mixed like that and to create a journey that takes you places, without you knowing.
You can identify progressive house by the manner in which it is presented, to me thats the key, since thats the basis on which the term 'progressive' came about in the first place. As it stands today, the term progressive house has changed sooo much and the kind of tracks that defined the genre, are just not being made now. Now this isnt really a bad thing, since the music is evolving and the sounds are changing, but the style of mixing and presentation is what will, and has defined progressive.
So where does my music fit in. and how would I describe it? I like to call it Melodic Progressive. I'm a sucker for melodies and those uplifting tunes, what I do is work on the basic principles of progressive mixing, and then give my own melodic edge to everything thats being mixed.
This is an ocean of a topic, and I could go on forever, but I hope this rambling of mine makes atleast some sense to you, and has given you an idea of what this style of music is about.
Feel free to post your comments or questons, if any.
Cheers!
